Set up microphones and speakers

Updated September 10, 2026

Clear karaoke sound depends more on placement and balanced levels than maximum volume. Begin quietly, position the equipment correctly, then raise one control at a time.

Choose the signal path

The YouTube backing track plays through the selected device or connected sound system. DCGrafix microphone scoring listens through the browser’s selected input. These can be separate: for example, a TV or speaker can play the music while a phone microphone provides the entertainment-score signal.

Place speakers ahead of the microphone

Feedback happens when amplified sound returns to the microphone and is amplified again. Put speakers in front of the singer and point them toward the audience. Avoid aiming the microphone at a speaker. Increase distance before reaching for an equalizer or feedback suppressor.

Set levels in the right order

Start with low output. Set the playback device around a moderate level, then adjust the speaker or amplifier for the room. Test the loudest part of a song and listen for harshness or distortion. Raise microphone gain only until the voice is clear. If feedback begins, reduce microphone gain first.

Improve phone and tablet scoring

Keep the device microphone away from fans, speaker ports, and vibrating tables. Use earphones when possible. If a Bluetooth headset introduces delay, try the phone’s built-in microphone or a wired option. Browser permission must remain enabled, and another app should not be using the microphone exclusively.

Do a final safety check

Use stable speaker stands, dry hands, grounded equipment, and undamaged power cords. Keep extension connections away from wet areas. Prevent cables from crossing doors or walkways. Follow each manufacturer’s electrical and ventilation instructions, especially for powered speakers and amplifiers.
